Plant Meristems: Cytokinins — The Alpha and Omega of the Meristem
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent studies have revealed important new details of how cytokinin-dependent mechanisms control plant growth. Intriguingly, cytokinins are involved in both maintaining meristems and promoting differentiation.

Grass meristems I: shoot apical meristem maintenance, axillary meristem determinacy and the floral transition.
The vegetative and reproductive shoot architectures displayed by members of the grass family are critical to reproductive success, and thus agronomic yield. Variation in shoot architecture is explained by the maintenance, activity and determinacy of meristems, pools of pluripotent stem cells responsible for post-embryonic plant growth. This review summarizes recent progress in understanding the...
متن کاملCytokinins Determine Arabidopsis Root-Meristem Size by Controlling Cell Differentiation
Plant postembryonic development takes place in the meristems, where stem cells self-renew and produce daughter cells that differentiate and give rise to different organ structures. For the maintenance of meristems, the rate of differentiation of daughter cells must equal the generation of new cells: How this is achieved is a central question in plant development. In the Arabidopsis root meriste...
متن کاملRegulation of plant growth by cytokinin.
Cytokinins are a class of plant-specific hormones that play a central role during the cell cycle and influence numerous developmental programs. Because of the lack of biosynthetic and signaling mutants, the regulatory roles of cytokinins are not well understood. We genetically engineered cytokinin oxidase expression in transgenic tobacco plants to reduce their endogenous cytokinin content. Cyto...
متن کاملThe Stem Cell Niche in Leaf Axils Is Established by Auxin and Cytokinin in Arabidopsis.
Plants differ from most animals in their ability to initiate new cycles of growth and development, which relies on the establishment and activity of branch meristems harboring new stem cell niches. In seed plants, this is achieved by axillary meristems, which are established in the axil of each leaf base and develop into lateral branches. Here, we describe the initial processes of Arabidopsis t...
متن کاملSuppression of a vegetative MADS box gene of potato activates axillary meristem development.
Potato MADS box 1 (POTM1) is a member of the SQUAMOSA-like family of plant MADS box genes isolated from an early stage tuber cDNA library. The RNA of POTM1 is most abundant in vegetative meristems of potato (Solanum tuberosum), accumulating specifically in the tunica and corpus layers of the meristem, the procambium, the lamina of new leaves, and newly formed axillary meristems. Transgenic line...
